March of Dimes
Walk Unites Team, Touches Hearts
In
April 2005, the Holland & Hart Foundation assembled an
entire team of co-workers, friends and family to participate
in the March of Dimes Walk America,
an effort to fund research to help save premature babies’
lives.
Through the leadership of team captains Louann Jamieson
and Donna Fountain, the Holland & Hart team raised over
$4,000 for the March of Dimes. Many volunteered to walk, raise
awareness and sponsorship dollars for the event. One volunteer,
Casey Ewen of Persuasion Strategies, has a vested interest
in the March of Dimes cause.
In 2003, Casey Ewen and her husband, Shane, experienced
heartache through the loss of their firstborn son, David Caleb
Ewen. During Casey’s first pregnancy, at 25 weeks, she
was diagnosed with HELLP Syndrome, a rare but serious disease
that can affect any pregnant woman. A life-threatening complication
of pre-eclampsia, HELLP Syndrome has only one known treatment:
immediate delivery. Three days after she was diagnosed, Casey
delivered Caleb at Swedish Medical Center under the care of
many doctors and specialists.
“Caleb was perfectly and wonderfully made,” Casey
said. “We cherish each moment we shared with Caleb and
praise God for allowing us to love this little boy for fifteen
glorious days.”
Many families have suffered the loss of a child due to complications
of premature birth. Each day in the United States, 1 in every
8 babies is born prematurely. Some of them may not survive,
and others will have health problems that could last a lifetime.
Out
of their desire to raise awareness about the March of Dimes
mission of fighting prematurity across the globe and locally,
right here in Colorado, Casey and Shane eagerly accepted the
challenge to be the Holland & Hart Foundation team ambassadors
for the March of Dimes Walk. Many of the team members walked in
memory of Caleb Ewen or to honor a loved one.
“We believe in the March of Dimes cause and trust
that the Holland & Hart Foundation made a difference in
the lives of these little one’s and their families,”
Casey said.
Casey made a small but significant difference, by personalizing
the challenge and raising over $1100 for what she affectionately
referred to as “Caleb’s Walk.”
“Caleb’s life radically transformed the Ewen
family and our hearts will never be the same,” Casey
said.
The Ewen’s are eagerly and hopefully expecting their
second child in October of 2005.
